Even I was skeptical before starting this anime. The hype has tremendously dwindled ever since it was first published on Netflix. I honestly feel this series deserved the hype it got and more. In my eyes, this anime has excellent animation and unique style. The voice acting and soundtrack is also very stunning and unique. character development was definitely present as you watch the short series to the end. It was obvious the characters learn from mistakes and tried to change themselves for the better.
The ending took most people by surprise including myself. It was not the cliche, "we all become friends again" kind off anticipated ending. It was executed differently and unlike a lot of of other series that tries to pull off such a difficult and complex ending, Devilman Crybaby portrayed it in one of the most beautiful and stunning ways i have ever witnessed. Yes, other animes have executed such themes that deal with topics like this too but i truly feel it was because of how the entire anime portrayed itself by making the viewer grow emotionally attached to the protagonist and antagonist within the short span of 12 episodes highly impacted most of our reactions for the final ending scene.
F L A W S
Of course, every anime has its flaws and this one as no exceptions. I have tried recommending my friends to watch this anime however many of them turn it down due to its grotesque and mature themes. Honestly I personally do not mind and rather enjoy these themes, nonetheless I understand completely if you turn down this masterpiece as it is too heavy for you.
I also did not really like the almost instant change of Akira. It felt too fast and I could not really grasp any sympathy for him whenever he freaked out about his new body or mentality. There were barely any moments where he or the other devilmans would sit down and actually think about the rapid change of their bodies. Well I guess it would be near to impossible to fit such aspects in a 12 episode anime. It would also be classified as a psychological anime if such themes were implemented, thus scaring away a lot of viewers.
You can watch the series on Kissanime or Gogoanime, unless you can afford the luxury of paying for a Netflix or Crunchyroll account.
